Platonism theorizes that a hierarchy of opposites structure existence itself. In linguistics, it means that words have concrete definitions and some require more attention than others. Jacques Derrida criticizes this restricting belief with his own semiotic theory, Deconstruction. While Derrida doesn’t necessarily define Deconstruction in his essay on Paul Celan, Poetics and Politics of Witnessing, he provides examples of it through testimony and bearing witness. By allowing these two to be interconnected but also separate from each other, poems combat the singularity of my verbal body and allow me to see texts in a variety of meanings.
